According to the author these compounds should be similar in potency to that of morphine.
1) First we oxidize Menthol to Menthone. This can be done with a variety of methods.
2) Menthone and Benzaldehyde are reacted to form Benzilidene adduct. This can be done in DMSO instead of the method listed in the document above.
3) The adduct is reacted with amine let's say pyrrolidine to form the product.
This class of opioids can also be made from cyclohexanone like shown in picture below - see US3928626 for more info.
