What wallet you use is up to you.
Install Monero GUI with a full node on your local machine.
You can buy BTC from ANY FIAT (currency USD,GBP,etc) exchange (like Kraken, Binance etc - these are KYC [know your customer] sites that require you to provide proof of identity]), transfer those BTC to your own locally hosted personal wallet (Electrum on Mac or Bitcoin Core on PC?). From there you can use TOR Browser to go to one of many anonymous exchange sites (like changenow.io). Go and exchange your BTC for XMR and have the XMR transferred to your Monero GUI wallet.
Then hopefully you are running Tails or Kodashi and have Feather Wallet on those. Transfer your XMR from Monero GUI to Fether Wallet and make your purchase form there.
This means your FIAT purchase of traceable BTC is no longer connected in any visible way to your XMR purchase.

I gotta ask, a lot of people use the trust wallet (BTC purchase)>transfer to cake wallet>exchange for XMR>send to BB wallet. Is this not safe if monero is untraceable? Because this is what I've been doing. On my phone

XMR is safe. But your mobile is doing direct XMR transactions so a wiretap at your mobile provider can show that your mobile (and its location) were involved in handling XMR at a specified time. That is a direct link to your person. Even though technically there is no link, if you are interesting enough to glowies, then you need to sever the link to your person by never engaging in that type of operation on your mobile. Even doing this on a burner can link you by its continued proximity to your own device, or linking the events of your device going off and the burner going on nearby all the time, can give that link.
