When I washed it with water, it went from top to bottom.

this is fine, cold p2p is heavier then water. Normaly it will float back to the top when you do a washing with saturated NaCl solution. NaCI can easy find in supermarked, sold as dishwasher additive (pure NaCI). This solution is then heavier than the P2P.
In my Experiments i have also not a red color. Hope everything i have written is correct.

From the experience of reactions, I’ll say that it is better not to use an excess of ester, but take an equimolar ratio. And distillate excess off benzaldehyde after the reaction.
